Wins Server on Server 2008 R2

  • Hello,

     

    is it still recommende to install a Wins Server on 2008 R2 for XP Clients?

    No need to install wins service on windows server 2008 DC unless you have third party application require it

    per default xp client's also should not use wins ? right?

    Basically we have running a Windows Domain and Ex07 Services?

    Could be sql 2000 be affected ?

  • You are probably safe with retiring WINS.   The two main dependencies are:

    1) pre-Windows 2000 clients

    2) NetBIOS applications that depend on, well, NetBIOS name resolution.  If the network is a single subnet, then the app can do without WINS.

  • Wins server are supported in windows 2008 but "Global Names" in DNS are the prefered "Single Label" resolution method.

    If you really need WINS, you can still use it.

  • Just as an additional note since Esteban brought up Global Names, this feature in DNS 2008 does not support dynamic registration as WINS does.
