Upgrade from Server 2008 Standard RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can I upgrade from Server 2008 Standard which I have installed as a Workgroup server on a peer to peer network (no active directory) with lots and lots of applications on it to 2012 Essentials?  None of the stuff I've read discusses this.

  • nope. no in-place upgrade. you either have to install clean or migrate.

  • Not tested by me, but consider creating/moving the existing install to a VHD, then installing your Server 2008 on the bare metal, then installing ONLY the hyper V role, then installing Essentials and your 2008 as VM's in the hyperv.  You could then join the Server 2008 to the Essentials domain, and by doing so save all the work of reinstalling everything and the cost of more hardware.

The above assumes the hardware is capable.
