Server 2003 print spooler crashed after applying MS09-029 RRS feed

  • Question

  • My company's print server installed the July security patches, including MS09-029, on last Sunday. A day followed when users started to print onto the network printers, the server's spooler service crashed every 15 mins or so. I configured the spooler to auto restart itself but sometimes it failed to do so, not to mention all users cannot print during spooler restart itself.

After uninstalling MS09-029, everything went back to normal.

The server hosts print queues for 15 network printers. Most of them are old models of LaserJets, and several Ricoh as well. All drivers are PCL6.

Is it a known problem or bug with MS09-029?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the post.

From your description, I understand that the printing spooler service always crashes after installing MS09-029 and this issue will be gone if the security update is removed.

Please understand that you may hit the hot issue of spooler crash with relationship to KB961371. In this case, I suggest we temporarily remove MS09-029 to make the printer server work properly.

If there is any update on this hot issue, I will inform you as soon as possible.

    Hope this helps.

  • Are you getting a Crash or a DEP execution prevention? I got the later after applying it.

  • We have the same problem, the patches were installed last thursday evening, and the spooler crashes several times every day.
We use Safecom for secure printing and we need to reboot the server every time this happens.

  • It is a fault in gdi32.dll. Not related to DEP.

  • Uninstall this patch, the print job back to normal.

  • And if you update your printer driver as the patch displayed after install the KB961371. When you uninstall the patch ,you may find that the printpages maybe have different problems. To solve it, restore the printer driver to the old version before install the patch.

  • Our company met the same problem these days after installing MS09-029. Spooler service crashed every 15 mins and even changed it to restart sometimes it failed as well.. Now we are trying to remove this patch and see what will happen. Will there be new problem with print service? Is there any offical annoucement from Microsoft for this?

  • We removed the patch and printing is back to normal. I hope Microsoft plans to address this soon as I do not like having this vulnerability on the server.

  • Have you received an answer on this problem.   We are having the same problem after application of the update.  Mostly it occurs when we try to print Japanese or Chinese Characters.  Thanks,

  • Has there been any resolution to this issue?   We have a HP 4200 Laserjet that is the issue and everytime we try to print Japanese Characters or Chinese it crashes the print spooler on Server 2003.   Several different error messages but mostly gdi32.dll is indicated.  This is a significant problem -  Thank you!

  • Any progress for this issue?
WindowsServer2003-KB961371-v2-x86-CHS.exe Version 2 that release on 8/11 solve this problem?
2003 server is our shared printer server, some printers will only print the first page when we applying KB961371v1, uninstall will solve this problem.
