2008R2 Standard server reboot to RECOVERY MODE after Jan 2013 Windows Updates?

  • Event log:

3:14 AM: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes.
3:27 AM: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (COMPUTER-NAME) has initiated the restart of computer (COMPUTER-NAME) on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned).
    Reason Code: 0x800200002
    Shutdown Type: Restart

Found this in the event logs after we came in this morning and the server was sitting at the "Choose a Language" menu for Recovery mode.  Anybody have a similar experience or theory why??

  • It could be the Windows Update service issued the auto restart of the server. Look into Windows Update history to see if there were any successed or failed updates. Not sure for why it booted into Recovery Console. If this continues to happen, you may boot from a setup DVD and do a startup repair.
