Windows Server 2008 64 bit - 32 bit compatibilty mode

    Question

  • Hi,

We are trying to migrate our application from Windows 2003 32 bit environment to Windows 2008 64 bit environment. Is there any option to make it compatible for 32 bit programs to work on the 64 bit windows 2008 platform?

    Can anyone please help.

    Regards,

    Jimmy

  • Hello,

lot's of 32bit programs can be installed also on 64bit and work, ask the application vendor about this and try it on a test machine.

  •  It depends on the application.  You can run 32 bit applications on 64 bit server.  WOW64 is the x86 emulator that allows 32-bit Windows-based applications to run seamlessly on 64-bit Windows. WOW64 is provided with the operating system and does not have to be explicitly enabled.

  • Hi,

As Meinolf mentioned, if the developer of the application developed the application to be compatible with both 32bit and 64bit of Windows system, you don’t need to do anything and just install it directly.

Base on my experience, most of the current 32bit applications are compatible with 64bit of Windows system. If the application is not compatible with 64bit of Windows system, you may need to contact the develop to upgrade it.
