Windows Server 2012 R2 setup - stuck on "Install Now" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm upgrading a virtual machine running Server 2008 to Server 2012 R2, via an ISO file. The installer opens up fine, to the usual "Install Now" window, which is followed by the usual "Setup is copying temporary files" and "Setup is starting" screens. However, a few seconds after the "Setup is starting" screen, the installer goes back to the "Install Now" window, without anything else happening.

This has happened every time I open up the installer, and occurs even if I'm running it from the desktop rather than a CD. I have also verified that all of the necessary files are in the ISO.

  • The much cleaner / safer method is to stand up a new one, patch fully, migrate roles or applications over to it.

    You can review here.

(please do not post log files in forums)

  • Hi,

We could try the following measure to troubleshoot upgrade issue.

    1.Run built-in windows troubleshooting tool:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\ System and Security\Fix problems with 2.Windows Update\Advanced\Run as administrator:

3.Run System Update Readiness Tool  to fix the issue automatically.

4.Run the command sfc /scannow with administrator right to check the health of system files.

5.Perform a Clean Boot  and manually update again.

    6.Disable firewall and antivirus temporarily.

7.reset Windows Update components with This script

However, if the issue persists after upper action, we recommend to check the following log file.

    :\windows\logs\cbs\  --- The whole folder
    :\windows\inf\--- The whole folder
    :\windows\Panther\  --- The whole folder
    :\Windows\System32\Winevt\Logs\  --- The whole folder
    :\windows\*.dmp
    :\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Panther--- The whole folder
    $windows.~bt\Sources\Panther
    $windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback

As TechNet forum will not provide log analysis support, we would recommend to create a ticket for analysis with link below:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/supportforbusiness/productselection

So, It would be more easy to setup a new server with Windows Server 2012 and migrate roles to it.
