Changing Logon Screen Colour/Picture? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have machines that are XP, Vista, and Windows 7, mostly 32bit but some 64bit.

Is there a single simple way to specify that the logon screen should either be simply black, with no wallpaper, or to specify a wallpaper?

I can find individual guides for XP, Vista, and Windows 7, but nothing seems to cover everything so I'm a little unsure of the best (maybe I should say simplest) way to achieve this.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

As far as I know, there is no such group policy can control the logon screen wallpaper for Windows XP, Vista and 7 centrally.

According to the installed operating systems, you may consider to move them to the different OUs and link the GPOs.

For Windows XP clients, you may try to create a shared folder to save the wallpaper and create a Registry GPP to modify the logon screen wallpaper path.

For Windows 7 clients, you may try to create a Registry and Files GPP to replace the logon screen wallpaper.

You may also try to achieve this goal by modify the registry with startup scripts. For the detailed scripts, please refer to the following thread:

  • Thank you, seems a little fiddly for Windows 7 but seems to backup what I thought i.e. two different GPO's with different WMI filters to target XP and Windows 7.

That leaves Vista, which I believe is damned near impossible via GPO due to the way it uses imageres.dll rather than a plain vanilla .jpg?

    Thanks,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

As per this article about Vista wallpaper, I think it is possible to change it if you use GPP to rename the existing .dll and then push the new one. I did not tried it, but it might work.
