ADPrep execution failed (First 2012 R2 DC promotion in 2003 Domain Environment) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Can anyone help please?

I trying to promote the first 2012 R2 server to a DC in my environment and get this error:

    ***

ADPrep execution failed -->System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception (0x80004005): A Device attached to the system is not functioning.

Check log files in the C:\Windows\debug\adprep\logs\20150317162001 directory for detailed information.

    ***

Here is a link to the logs referenced above 20150317162001.zip

I used dsquery on the 2003 DC to check the Schema before and it was version 30 (server 2003) and checking now its 69 (2012 R2)

So the wizard has done something it showed 'upgrading forest' for a long time 5+mins before it gave the error.

I am logged on as Domain Administrator and can confirm that this account is also a member of Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins.

This is a test environment so the 2003 domain controller has been restored here from an image backup using Symantec system restore, Our 2nd 2003 DC is not available so I have run 'metadata cleanup' for that machine and also removed it from DNS. Also I had to do an authoritative restore using the BurFlags to get NTFRS working again because of the image restore. Also the exchange server is not in the lab which is our CA so I've tried to remove all the Ad objects to do with this following this article KB889250 but there are a couple of things which I couldn't remove not sure if this has anything to do with the problem.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ian Martin

  • I could not get forestprep to work no matter what I did, I even built a new clean 2003 server and it failed the same way.

I'd turned off Firewalls, antivirus, all non MS services still no good.

My work around is to built a 2008 server and run forestprep on the 2003 server direct with the 32bit adprep / forestprep with 2008 and then run the 2012 64bit adprep /forestprep direct on the 2008 server.

It all seems to be around running adprep /forestprep across the network running it locally on a DC has worked fine every time.

Hope this is some help to someone.

  • Is the 2003 Active Directory domain functional level set to 2003? It won't work if the domain is still at 2000.

  • Hi,

It seems like you have found the solution.

I just want to add some information. As we know, in Windows Server 2012 or 2012r2, Adprep.exe is integrated into the AD DS installation process and runs automatically as needed.

Adprep must  be run on a 64-bit server that runs Windows Server 2008 or later. There is no longer a 32-bit version (Adprep32.exe).

    Hope this could be helpful.

    Regards.
