I have been trying to install WSUS in Windows Server 2012 Essentials and am facing problems. Any help would be appreciate.
Hi, for Essentials edition (still in Beta release), best to ask in the dedicated forum:
That is incorrect.. I just like you, I wanted WSUS on my Essentials server, and probably read the same POORLY written PDF that has Datacenter $5000 AND Server $850 in the same line for comparisons. Windows Server 2012 DOES have WSUS, and you can do an in-place upgrade to Server without a format re-install.
Check out this super simple guide on how to do it.. and it also tells you what items you will keep of Essentials, and what parts of Essentials you will lose if you get bigger than x amount of users/devices
Kinda cool, since you get the Essentials special stuff, and you can get the Server "add-ins", but of course you will have two server licences tied up in doing it.. But I figured this out with my Technet Subscription, so no big deal since it's included.
From what I see Essentials does have some kind of a WSUS built in to it (maybe I'm confused) but it only checks the updates on clients that are connected. I have a need to be able to run updates on computers that are NOT connected to the domain.. so I HAVE to have WSUS..
What I find even more odd than Essentials not having WSUS.. it's the fact that is doesn't support Vista that came out around same time as OSX 10.5, but it does support OSX 10.5.. That is complete BS on Microsoft's part. So now I am forced to upgrade my two POS computers to Windows 7 or 8 just so I can connect them to the Essentials Server.
You cannot enable the Windows Server Update Services role in Windows
Server 2012 Essentials:
Install the hotfix in that KB, then you can install WSUS.

So where is the "this super simple guide on how to do it"? I have followed the MS instructions on setting up WSUS on 2012E but there is no selfupdate web site created and therefore no computers listed in the WSUS console - not even the 2012E server is listed.
