WDS installation fails to a remote PC - Trying to install windows 10 PRO from a server 2008 R2 WDS RRS feed

  • WDS - Server 2008 r2

    Trying to install windows 10 and it fails saying "Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible and restart the installation. Refer screenshot and logs below. PLease let me know the cause of the problem.

  • That log file may be incorrect. You are getting the Access Denied (0xC0000005) error in the UI, this is before the first reboot, yes? The appropriate log file would be on the ramdisk still, the x: drive.

    Error 0xC0000005 means access denied.

    Please make sure that the client has the suitable permission on the RemoteInstall folder.

  • where in the x: drive should i check ?it says access denied if i try to open the file found x:windows\setupact.log

    and x:\windows\setuperr.log is 0 bytes anyway, once again access denied if tried to open it.

    x:\windows\logs\CBS has no files in it.

    Also rebooted several times to try installing the image.

    Could you please tell me how to give client the suitable permission on the RemoteInstall folder?

    Let me know the path to the folder on wds and client meaning give ALL USERS full permission?

    If you get an error trying to view setupact.log, you can copy it to another location on the ramdisk and open it.

  • My hunch is that your partition scheme is not correct for Windows.  Try removing the partitions and recreating.

    Also - 0xC0000005 does not mean "Access Denied".  0x00000005 is "Access Denied"  (The 0xC is found in Windows Setup errors.  If you have one, you can review the setupact and setuperr logs in the panther folder.

    Again - try repartitioning the drive and starting over.

  • 0xC0000005 is Access Violation, whereas 0x00000005 is Access Denied. It is a contextual difference.
