Migrate WK 2008 R2 and to WK 2019 server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have migrated today my Dc from WK 2008 R2 to my exist DC with WK 2019 Server. I transfer all my FSMOs roles from WK 2008 R2 to the WK 2019 Server successfully. If I run netdom query FSMO, it display that all my FSMOs roles are located on WK 2019 server. But I wan to add Schema Master role with mmc. But I dont see it there. Any Idea why?

    I have to mention that before I transfer my FSMO I had 3 DCs with WK 2009. Therefore I did not run the following Regsvr32.exe C: \ windows \ system32 \ schmmgmt.dll

    Should I run Regsvr32.exe C: \ windows \ system32 \ schmmgmt.dll on the WK 2019 DC again?

Why can I not see the Schema Master?

    Regards

    Nick

  • Hi,

    Thanks for sharing here!

regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll ju is used to register the .dll for the Active Directory Schema.

By default, the Active Directory Schema MMC snap-in is not registered on domain controllers or machines with the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed. To use the snap-in for the first time on a new machine, you’ll need to register the DLL.

For exmaple, on a member client (win10)of the domain, before run the command ,the mmc shows the content without the Schema Admin snap, and after the command successfully, the the Schema Admin snap will display in it:

So as Dave said , it is not related with the FSMO role. You check the FSMO role with the command : netdom query FSMO, as you tested,if all the roles displayed , it means that the FSMO roles were transferred successfully.

  • regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll just registers the Schema Admin snap-in. By default this snap in is there on your drive but not registered.

After registration you can open a new MMC Console (Start\Run\mmc) then in the MMC Console, go to File\Add Remove Snap-in, Add the Active Directory Schema snap-in

  • Is it the only reason because I have to regisiter the dll. file? It means that I have transfer my Schema Master correct to the WK 2019? Am I right?

  • No, this has nothing to do with the actual transfer. If you want the MMC Schema Admin snap-in to be available then registering the mentioned DLL is a prerequisite.
