  • Windows Server 2012, includes WSUS as a role/feature (as it did for Server2008).

The version of WSUS which ships as a role in Server2012, is v6.2
[EDIT Feb 03-2013: changed v4 to be v6.2]

This version of WSUS is not available for download to earlier version of Windows Server.

Probably Server 2012, which includes WSUS 4 as a role.

Do you have a public document from microsoft with this content?

Pedantic correction -- the version of WSUS which ships as a role in Server 2012 is v6.2

There is no such thing as WSUS v4 (but those not interested in Win2012 can continue to hope). :-)

  • so.... Hi Lawrence....

So 3.0 SP2 is the latest for 2008 versions of the OS. But for 2012 6.2 is the latest? What is new with WSUS besides powershell?

  • So 3.0 SP2 is the latest for 2008 versions of the OS.

Well, there are actually, right now, several "latest versions" for Windows Server 2003/2008/2008R2:

    • WSUS3SP2 (Oct 2009) - v3.2.7600.226 -- generally this version should not exist
    • w/KB2720211 - v3.2.7600.251 -- systems that do not patch Win8/WS2012 systems may still be at this version
    • w/KB2734608 - v3.2.7600.256 -- this is where most WSUS v3 servers will be; this version is the minimum required to patch Win8/WS2012 systems.
    • w/KB2828185 - v3.2.7600.262 -- for the small number of users who had issues with the wsusutil export command generating CAB files >2GB, this patch offers alternative export formats
But for 2012 6.2 is the latest?

For Windows Server 2012, the version is 6.2.

For Windows Server 2012 R2 the version is 6.3.

I've not yet had an opportunity to see if they did any magic with the version number for the WS2012R2 "Update" release (which, of course, is yet-another new baseline of Windows Server 2012 R2, which suggests that there ought to be a uniquely identifiable instance of WSUS v6 as well.

What is new with WSUS besides powershell?

That's about it, other than the myriad of headaches that now exist if you want to *manage* a WSUS server across operating systems.

  • We have Windows Server 2012R2 and WSUS Version 6.3 within that.

In the past we had Server 2008 WSUS and it had issues patching 2012 Servers hence we had to replace the WSUS server with a newer one. Is this the case for all Server versions. Ie if we have Server 2016's in service, will we need to have a Server 2016 WSUS Server v10 in order patch them?

  • Moderator or not, this is only partially helpful because you give the answer, but you don't explain HOW or WHY you came up with that answer.

A complete answer should link to Microsoft published documentation on this subject or a reproducible method of verifying this sort of information.
