Change From Roaming to Local Profiles - Server 2008

    Question

  • Our small group uses roaming profiles as a holdover from when we used Exchange Server and people logged onto different machines.
We no longer have Exchange, and everyone logs onto their 'own' machine all of the time.

What's the best way to change from using roaming profiles to the local profile?

    a) Simply remove the profile path from each user's properties in AD?
    b) Change a group policy to prevent profiles being replicated to the server?
    c) A combination of these?
    d) Something else?

    Thanks,

  • Hello vba_djs,

To change from roaming profile to local profile, you just need to delete the profile path from user’s properties in AD Users and Computers.

If the profile path has been set to blank, when users login they will use the local profile (if there is one), or create a new one. On the client side, the User Profiles settings under Advanced tab of My Computer properties can also been changed to local.

However, the profile files on the server will not be removed automatically. You may need to manually remove them after you make sure everything is working fine.

  • Hi Vba_djs,

Thank you for posting in windows server forums,

you need to change user profile path from roaming to local , restar the client , after which client will start loading the profile locally.

It would be safe to test this on one of the client and then if clients are able to login successfully then you can go ahead and change the profile path for the users.
