  • Question

  • Hello All,

    Thanks in advance,

In my environment there are around 1500 servers, only in 10 server DHCP server role is installed, but scom will search for all the servers for the DHCP server service and it generates alerts that actually not required.

its not all about only DHCP server service, the same thing is happening for smtp service, dns service ftp service etc...

could any one help me out to stop this.

  • at first, SCOM is not automatic monitor DHCP service, SMTP, DNS or FTP service except relevance MP is installed. Take DHCP as an example.
If DHCP MP is imported into SCOM, it will automatic disocvery all agents machine which DHCP service is installed and generate an alert if the service is in stop state.  The workaround is :
    1) Create a group containing DHCP server which you want to monitor
    2) using override to disable DHCP disocvery except group 1)
    3) using powershell cmdlet Remove-SCOMDisabledClassInstance to remove class instances for which previously disabled discovery

  • I agree with Roger, to monitor DHCP, we need to download the DHCP management pack, then the discovery in the management pack will help to find all DHCP servers, and then there are monitors, rules and also reports in the management pack that can be used to monitor DHCP health.

If you only create service monitor to monitor DHCP service, we also can only apply the monitor to specific groups by overriding.
