Users logging in with temporary user profiles RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I just started to have 30-40 users logging in with temporary user profiles. Everytime they log into the Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server, they get this message: "You have been logged on with a temporary profile" or they get

"The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded"

    Things I have done

    1) Went to C:\Users\Username and deleted the username.

    2) Went to C:\Users\TEMP and deleted all TEMP profiles.

    3) Went to hkey_local_machine\software\Microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\profilelist\s-1-5-21.bak and deleted all these keys.

    4) Went to C:\Users\Default and went to Advanced and selected "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object."

Issue remains that new users are now logging in with temporary user profiles. Any ideas of what else I can try.

    Thanks

  • We are using RDS. I don't know about UPD. I didn't setup the Terminal Server. But researching states that UPD was introduced in 2012. I'm running 2008 R2.  So, now I have increased from 3 vCPU to 4 vCPU and from 16 GB to 20 GB RAM.  After the changes, users are still logging in with temporary profiles. Also, users are getting this error "The User Profile Service failed the logon.  User Profile cannot be loaded" .

    Any other ideas?

Seems ppl are saying replacing the Defualt user folder or (re)setting permissions works:

  • I'm still having issues with this. It seems like everyday I'm discovering users logging in with temporary profiles and have to delete from C:\Users\Profiles and the registry subkey.

  • I'm getting multiple error messages in Application logs.

Event 1508 - User Profile Service

Windows was unable to load the registry. This problem is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.

Event 1511 - User Profile Service

Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

Event 1500 - User Profile Service

Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning correctly.

I looked at the https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2601888 but nothing really applies to me. Any additional ideas?

How many session hosts do you have? If more than 1, remove the trouble session host and troubleshoot it like that. Are you using UPD's?

  • What is UPD? How do I check the session hosts? I think there is an issue since the Memory is around 96%, 97% and I usually have 45-55 concurrent users connected.

UPD=User profile disk. Are you using RDS or RDP?

  • I have already tried replacing the Default user folder by resetting the permissions. I can't even start the "Windows Modules Installer" service. I can't run sfc /scannow. I tried to install hotfix KB 2871131 and wouldn't install. I'm getting to the point of building a new TS 2012 R2.   This started happening about 1 month ago, so I don't have a snapshot.  I'm still getting users logging in with temporary profiles every day. I can't reach out of Microsoft for a support case, so unless there are other ideas, I'm going to have to setup a new TS 2012 R2.
