  • hi,
If you want to split existing RDS CAL,some on server 2012 r2 and others on server 2016 , you can rebuild current RD Licensing databased on server 2012 r2, then re-install RDS CALs on both licensing server respectively, with rds CALs number which you want.
    Rebuild the RD Licensing Database:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/dd851428(v%3dws.11)

if you want to migrate all rds cal from server 2012 r2 to server 2016 ,you can refer below documents.
Migrate your Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs)
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/migrate-rds-cals#establish-rds-cal-migration-method

if there is any RDS cal can not be enrolled ,we can
Locate the Microsoft Clearinghouse Telephone Number to solve your issue.
Locate the Microsoft Clearinghouse Telephone Number for Your Country or Region
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/cc754874(v=ws.11)

  • Hi
Why we have to rebuilt the RDS licensing database ?
because after you right click w2016 RDLS and select "manage license",there will be two options in below picture.when you select "migrate licenses from andother license server to this license server",there are 2 reasons which you must select.like picture.Either options indicate that when source rd license server(w2012 RDLS) is not available you can select them.

  • Dear Andy You,

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    I have few more queries.

Why we have to rebuilt the RDS licensing database , can we install the license in 2016 server with the same licensing details like agreement number which was used to install in 2012 R2  and we will configure limit in local group policy in both the servers... Is it works??

    Thanks in advance.
