Unable to install programs on 2 of our Windows Server 2003 machines RRS feed

  • Question

  • We're having an issue with not being able to install programs. When we execute an exe or MSI, we receive the following error:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

EXE's will install if I execute them from command line. MSI's won't install through either methods. I am logged in as Domain Admin. I tried through various admin accounts with no luck.

We are running Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2

    Any ideas?

  • 1. What is the difference between "good"and "bad" servers? You can compare the software content With winAudit

    2. Have you contacted softwarev vendor for help?

    3. For msi there are various parameters, that help to install. Look for parameters.

    Here is one example

    msiexec.exe /i program.msi ISSETUPDRIVEN=1 /qb

    4. This site has helped me to resolve similar problems

  • We have no "good" servers. The rest of our servers are 2008 and work just fine. We have no other 2003 machines. The ones I mentioned here are our only ones. I have not contacted our vendor for help.
