    I got a support call today asking if there was an alternative to Remote Desktop Connection for Mac as the download page discourages its use on Mac OS X 10.7 and later?  However Lion and soon Mountain Lion (Mac OS X 10.8) will be the preferred platform Apple pushes on the masses.  So will we see a RDC for Mac 2.2 or even a 3.0 soon? Or will Remote Desktop be a strictly a Microsoft platform technology?

    This is an old post, but Microsoft released a new RDP client for Macs that support RDP Gateways as well. Here:

    Hello,

    The MAC RDP Client download page mentions "Operating System Versions: Mac OS X version 10.4.9 (Tiger) or a later
    version of Mac OS"

    You could at least try

    It works for me too however I'm beginning to get reports of it not working right for some Lion users.

    Trying to get more info from them.  Was wondering if anyone caught wind of any issues on Lion.

    Thinking maybe the new 10.7.4 update broke something.  I know our Mac admin doesn't like what has been changed in it.

    If it is the truth that it is not working well with newest version, you can at least use Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0.1. If the newest version works well, you can ignore the Note  "icrosoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac (version2.1.1) is not intended for use with Mac OS X v10.7 (Lion) or later."

    I've been using the Microsoft RDP client on Lion for a year now. Unfortunately I just upgraded my MBP to Mountain Lion, and now I'm having some resolution scaling issues. I tell it to use a specific resolution but when it logs in the start menu and task bar are WAY off the bottom of the screen. I tell it to Fit to screen and it shrinks way down to make it fit. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't understand why it would scale perfectly in Lion and now it's suddenly a problem. 

    if anyone has a fix I would love to hear it. I use this client daily.

    I've not had any issues with RDC in Lion.  However, since upgrading to ML, I've noticed that when I launch a session, the 'connection' box tends to stay on the screen.  I haven't noticed if it happens when using a single screen, but I primarily use RDC at work with a secondary display connected.  The RDC session launches on the second display and the connection box stays on my MBP screen.  Sometimes it will go away after 10-15 min or so, sometimes it stays until I close that RDC session.

    Has anyone else noticed this?  The app seems to work fine, this is more of an annoyance than anything.  I've been checking for updates to see if this gets fixed, but nothing so far.

    RDC had been working well with Lion on my Intel Core 2 iMac.

    I upgraded to ML last week, and now it is unstable.  I've sent the crash report to MSFT.  It looks like a bad video memory access is the cause of the problem.  On my system, it takes over 30 mins for a crash.

    My company requires VMWare View to access a remote windows desktop.  Under Mac OS, VMWare View calls MSFT RDC to handle the screen interface.  It is RDC that is the problem, not VMWare View, according to the crash logs.

    I'm shifting to a VMWare View session running under Ubuntu (Ubuntu is a guest OS using VMWare Fusion) until MSFT can get a new or patched version of RDC out.  If you do this on a Mac, it will work fine.  The configuration does not use MSFT RDC under Ubuntu.

    RDC continually crashes on my Lion system. This started about 1 week ago, up until then it worked just fine. When I use it on my older machines it works just fine, but it does not like Mac OS X v10.7 - I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it does no good. 

    Where can I find the 2.0.1 version?

    I have the same issue that Window RDC does not work on OS 10.8. 

    I have switched to CORD which is the MAC RDC protocol and it is working well. Just need the IP address of the computer you are logging into.

    I've read about CoRD.  Unfortunately CoRD has even fewer features than Microsoft RDC.  CoRD is a GUI front end for RDesktop which supports RDP protocol version 4 (NT 4.0) with some version 5.  At least Microsoft RDC supports RDP 6.x.

    I'm going to switch over to XenApp 6.5.  At least they do have a OS X 10.8 client.

    I've just done the same thing, although I would have to say that it's merely "working" as opposed to "working well".

    Like other applications that haven't been re-written to support Retina, under Mountain Lion RDC is rendered with pixel-doubling, which means the best remote resolution you can get is 1440x900.  It looks OK I guess, but if I then go into Bootcamp and RDP to another Windows 7 box, I get the full 2880x1800, and let me tell you it's a sight to behold!

    So I would definitely place myself amongst those with their hand up for a re-write please Microsoft...

    I installed a fresh copy of Mac OS X 10.8.2 on an iMac to test something for our Mac admin.  I then attempted to install the RDC 2.1.1 client and OSX complained that it wasn't properly signed.  I attempted then with 2.0.1 and it had the same message.

    The average user isn't going to go out of their way to figure out how to disable the restriction of apps to only be downloaded from the Apple App Store in Security & Privacy control panel.

    So the MS RDC client is now completely unusable.

    In OS X Finder Ctrl LMB (or RMB) Click on the installer and choose Open.

    I think that the average user can probably manage this!

    I'm having the same kind of problem and can't find anywhere on the web that tells me how to get passed this.

    I can connect in to my company's LAN with no problems, using Cisco AnyConnect VPN 3.1, but when I start RDC 2.1.1 and give it my computer's name (or IP address) it will sit there forever before coming back and saying "".  I can try this a number of times, and then at some point it will come back and ask for my authentication information.  So finally it got connected to the system at the login level.  Then I give it name, password, domain, and hit enter, and again it sets forever, that twirly icon spinning to show that it's thinking.

    I'm not really sure what's happening here.  I'm running Lion (10.7.5), and I'm seeing that, although some people say that RDC 2.1.1 doesn't work on Lion, there are those that say it works for them no problem.  This is really disconcerting.  I love my macbook, but my company works on Windows 7 PCs, so I have to be able to make this connection.  Is it really possible that Microsoft is not going to continue supporting Lion and Mountain Lion for RDC connections?  That would be a very unfortunate state of affairs.

    The mac client doesn't even support RD Gateway?  Oy.  I loaded up the itap rdp client ($25) and it works well.  Hope MS gets a new version out; my clients aren't going to want to pay $25/pop.

    Well I've been using Windows Server 2008 R2 Sp1 with no RD Gateway.

    We use Juniper's VPN solution for off site access.  However that's becoming a nuisance with Java+Chrome+Mac not working anymore.  Java is now 64bit only on Mac and Chrome is only 32bit.  Chrome 64 support is coming but at a snails pace.

    RDC 2.1.1 does/did work with Windows Server 2008 R2 as it does have NLA and SSL support.  CoRD and RDesktop do not.  I used to have RDSH with NLA and SSL enabled and it worked fine for a long time.

    Good point.

    I want to remotely connect my brother's Mac on OS X 10.8 to my XP Pro SP3 PC. Can anyone recommend the best way of doing this? Do the problems people are describing above apply to this set up?

    it would still be good if we got an official answer on whether MS intend to release a client for MAC that supports RDP 8, especially if they want to compete with Citrix in the future, they need to release clients for a broad range of devices.  in the mean time we have to use iTAP for those who have macs or Tablets.

    I just removed 2.02 and installed 2.0 and it seems to work now. I am running OS X 10.8.3. Hopefully it will stay that way. This has been painful.

    Nevermind, it just broke again. I'll follow up with more if I find out why so as to help others with this same issue with RDC and OSX 10.8.

    I am remotely connecting to Windows Server 2012 Essentials. I haven't tried any other version of Windows on the server side, but I can say that in my case, I can connect just fine using the laptop right next to me running Windows 7 Pro, without incident.
