DISKPART - Windows 2003

    Question

  • We have an Oracle RAC setup with various Disk LUNs the vendor is requesting that the disk number match on every server in order to work.   Can you use diskpart to switch disk numbers on Windows 2003.     Would this be the right tool for this job, can this be done?

    Thanks in advanced

  • The vendor is probably means the BUS-TARGET-LUN ID not the Diskpart Volume # you appear to be going after.

Using disk manager, right click the Grey label where is says DISK 1,2, etc, select properties.  On the general tab you will see the Location field listed as something similar to the following

Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0

The BUS # is the number assigned to the SCSI, or FC bus.  It can't be changed

The Target ID, is typically the SCSI ID, or the LUN ID assigned by the Storage Array in a SAN or from the SCSI controller, this can be changed at the SAN/SCSI Controller (not from the Windows OS).  This is probably what the vendor is referring to.

  • I agree with Gunner999, it seems the vendor would like to have lun # match the servers.

Here is an article found from Dell support website:

Changing the LUN RAID Type or the number or capacity of a LUN's disk modules

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/stor-sys/dom/9867c/LUN.HTM

Also I see other articles which said the lun ID can be changed only during creating.
