Print driver only available on Windows Update. How to get that driver and install it on a server?

  • I'm locating a driver for HP Deskjet 6122, which on their webpage is listed only downloadable from Windows Update ( (HP says one can use driver from HP Deskjet 990c).

The driver I'm looking for must run on Windows 7 x64.

So what do I do? I tried downloading the driver from Windows Update to a Windows 7 x64 client, but I am unable to export that driver to a directory that I can export on my print server.

    The print-server is Windows 2003 R2 x86.

The downloaded files from Windows update was available at c:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\prnhp001.inf_amd64_neutral_081cf2b90ec9e6d5\

    I then edited prnhp001.inf

    "hp deskjet 990c"                                             = MS_HPFDJ99E.GPD,HEWLETT-PACKARDDESKJ4C9E,hp_deskjet_990c ; Hardware ID
    "hp deskjet 6122 series"                                             = MS_HPFDJ99E.GPD,HEWLETT-PACKARDDESKJ4C9E,hp_deskjet_990c ; Hardware ID

and then tried to add the driver on my Windows server (exported that dir to a UNC share)

The server seemed to accept the driver, but at end of install I got the error:
    Additional Drivers (dialogue name)
Unable to install hp deskjet 6122 series, x64, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 driver. Operation could not be completed.
