Can't install backup feature on Server 2k8 Standard RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I am unable to install the backup feature on Server 2k8 Standard SP2. It fails each time with the error:

<Error>: Attempt to install Windows Server Backup failed with error
code 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation

This servers only role is as Hyper-v host. The other features installed are .NET Framework 3.0 Features, RSAT (Hyper-V Tools), and Windows Power Shell (a pre-req to Backup).

I've researched the issue and tried every troubleshooting step I can think of. All to no avail. Please help.

Here is a snippet from the server manager log (from one of the many failed attempts):

  • Hi,

Thanks for reporting the issue. We will analyse the traces and get back. Meanwhile, it would be good know if the other features beside Backup are installing, or is the problem with the installation of the Backup feature only. Also, the installation of the backup feature can be attempted using the servermanagercmd.exe commandline tool using the steps below:

To query the features installed, run on a cmd prompt: "servermanagercmd.exe -query"
For installing backup feature: "servermanagercmd.exe -install Backup" (good to check if just the backup feature is installing without the sub feature)
For installing backup feature and the sub-feature: "servermanagercmd.exe -install Backup-Tools"

    Thanks,
    Abhinav

  • Thanks for the reply. The Windows Power Shell feature did install successfully. It was not installed prior but as it was a pre-requisite to backup, I installed it fine.

Just tried using the command line. Same error:

  • Hi,

My apologies for a late response, took me sometime to locate the correct team. We need the logs in the directory "%windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log" to dig up the cause for the error.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

Thanks for sharing the logs, we found the failure deeper in the component stack. We need the logs from %windir%\inf\setupapi*.log to drill the cause of the issue further. I understand I am asking for a different set of logs for the second time, but having numerous interconnected components in the setup, we are moving one step at a time to find the root cause of the issue.

Thank you very much for your help. And I'm not at all irritated about further requests for information. I too just want to get this resolved.

  • Hello.

The failure seems to be due to a driver (blbdrive.sys) that is part of Windows Server Backup feature being already present.

The installation logs indicate that the driver got successfully installed on 2009/03/26. It is not clear as part of which package did the driver get installed. And later when you tried to install the feature on 2009/06/26, it failed because the device it created already exists. It is not expected that the driver is installed on a machine where it is already present. It is supposed to be installed first time as part of the installation.

    Couple of questions:
    1. Would you be able to recollect what got installed around 2009/03/26? May be poking around the application event log for events around this date might help if you cannot recollect.
    2. Can you elaborate as to how you installed OS on this machine, what service packs you installed? We can then try to repro this issue locally to help you out further.

As a workaround, you could try to uninstall the driver manually by following these steps and then try to install the backup feature:
    1. Go to device management console (run devmgmt.msc from an elevated command-prompt)
    2. Select View -> Show hidden devices from the files menu
    3. Go to "System devices" and expand its contents
    4. You should see "File as Volume Driver" node under it.
    5. Right click on the node and choose Uninstall.

If you are able to do all this, the driver should get uninstalled. Then you can try to install the feature and see whether it succeeds.

    Thanks,
    Sriram [MSFT]

  • Sriram,

Thanks for your continued efforts with this and apologies for my delay. Got tied up with a different project.

The server was installed on 24 March. It was installed via DVD media. My practice is to install via media, install service pack(s), install any other updates, install drivers.

This server is also being backed up to a Windows Home Server (from suggestions from the SBS community as this server hosts SBS2k8). I thought that perhaps the problematic driver was installed when I installed the Windows Home Server Console but that Console was not installed until 2 April (though I did have some problems getting that installed so it's possible, but unlikely, that I tried to install the WHS Console on 26 March) (see https://connect.microsoft.com/SBS08/community/discussion/richui/default.aspx?NewsgroupID=2553&RootArticleID=461374).

I searched all event log entries for 26 March and didn't find anything that was installed on that date.

Also, nor can I find "File as Volume Driver" in the Device Management Console. I loaded the Console exactly pursuant to your instructions.

    See screen shot here: http:\\209.200.72.155\capture2.jpg

Look forward to hearing from you and thanks again,

    John

  • Hello John,

Looks like you installed SBS server on 24th March, correct?

    Thanks,
    Sriram [MSFT]

  • No. SBS was installed on 26 March.

  • Hello.

I am following up with the relevant team to understand what could be causing the failure you are noticing. Will let you know as soon as I have any updates.

    Thanks,

  • Hello.

SBS installation would install Windows Backup feature as part of its installation. So trying to install the feature again would cause this failure.

    Couple of questions:
    1. Are you not seeing the feature as already installed in server manager management console?
    2. Can you list the output of "servermanagercmd.exe -query" on this machine?

    Thanks,
    Sriram [MSFT]

    Friday, August 14, 2009 6:10 AM
  • That doesn't make sense. Installing SBS 2k8 as a guest would not install backup to the host.

    1. No, I'm not seeing it installed. 3 of 34 features are installed: .Net 3.0, RSAT, Windows Power Shell

    2.

  • As I mentioned earlier, from the setup logs I see that the driver which is part of the backup feature got successfully installed on 2009/03/26 on the host machine where you are trying to install backup feature. It is not clear why the driver is not getting listed in the device management.

    Couple of more questions:
    1. Can you check for events in event viewer under Windows Logs -> Setup and see if there is any event around 3/26?

    2. Do you see the driver & other backup related files installed on this machine? You can try the following commands:
    dir c:\Windows\system32\drivers\blbdrive.sys
    dir c:\Windows\system32\wbengine.exe
    dir c:\Windows\system32\wbadmin.exe

    Thanks,

  • 1. See my post on 29 July.

    2. blbdrive.sys is in the drivers folder. neither wbengine.exe or wbadmin.exe are in the system32 folder.

  • Sorry for the delay in replying back.

We are investigating the issue here. That's why it is taking time. I will get back to you once we have any update.

    Thanks,

  • Hello.

We were not able to repro this issue locally. We installed the server SKU and SP2 on top of it. We are able to install/uninstall backup feature as expected.

Can you save the setup event log and send it across to me over mail? You can send it to sriramb-nospam@microsoftdotcom (remove -nospam from the ID to get the real one).

    Thanks,
    Sriram [MSFT]

  • John,

    Thanks for the information provided.

Looks like the issue might be because there are integrity violations with the Windows Resource Protection.

    1. Can you check if you can install any other feature in this state? You can probably uninstall the feature if you don’t want it.
    2. Can you try sfc.exe /SCANNOW and see if violations getting reported get fixed? Then you can try installing backup feature and see if it works.

Would be great if you can share the CBS & ServerManager logs & output of sfc.exe /SCANNOW after you try (1) & then (2) separately.

    Thanks,
    Sriram [MSFT]

  • FYI, I just re-OS'd the machine so the problem is "resolved". I appreciate all your help but this was a needle in a haystack and we weren't getting anywhere. Especially since this was such a basic install.
