the remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license

    Question

  • hello,

we have a windows 2008 enterprise server and I have installed and worked with TS with 10 cals.

also it is a memebr of a DC (but not a DC).

today I got the following error message ... "the remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license"

also i have tried  the following; "MSTSC/ admin"  and it worked.

Please advise what should i do to access TS normally? or what is the difference between with admin parameter etc.

  • Hi LingLenny,

Thank you in posting in Windows Server Forum.

According to your description, I understand that your TS server is not able to find TS license server to provide a license.

The "MSTSC/ admin" remote desktop to server for admin propose, it does not require TS license.

Did you have a License server installed in your environment? If so, please follow the article below to connect a Terminal Services License server.

  • Do you have an available TS Licensing Server? Here's an article on troubleshooting Remote Desktop Licensing errors: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756826(WS.10).aspx#BKMK_13

The MSTSC /ADMIN switch connects to the console session of the server. This is only suitable for maintenance tasks on the server and not intended for standard users.

  • I am also facing the same problem, installed the licenses on Server 2008 R2 and when trying to RDP that server (without /admin) gives me the exact same error msg:

"The remote session was disconnected because there are no remote desktop license servers available to provide a license."

    What the hell ?

  • I had the same issue, even though my license server was installed and activated. I turned off the "one connection per user" option in licensing, and this allowed me to connect. I dont know why it would give a license server not available error, but this worked for me. Good luck.

  • You actually have to add the license server in the RD Session Host Configuration, under Edit Settings, Licensing, Remote Desktop License Servers...

  • If you actually do not requre TS, remove the role and normal RDP will work
