Why will system restore not work? Windows 7

    Question

  • Each time I try to use system restore I get the same error message (0x80070005) teliing me that a file was not accessible, or my anti virus may have prevented restore. I have turned off/uninstalled anti-virus and still get same. When I look in Control Panel, at my Backup options, I am unable to access any of the options. ie Can not access Backup Now/change settings/manage space etc. When I click on any of these nothing happens. Restore points are there but nothing from the backup choices apprears to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • After uninstalling the antivirus program, login using safe mode. Then try restoring system.

And what made you to use system restore??

    Thanks

  • Thank you for replies. I have tried safe mode but did not work. Also uninstalled Zone Alarm (which has been causing a serious problem for other reasons) and AVG. Will still not restore, nor will any of the System Recovery features work in Control Panel. Can not perform a backup or manage settings etc.

even after Zone Alarm and AVG uninstallation, can't you perform a backup ?

try startup repair from installation disc.

  • Will not perform any backup or any of the 'restore'functions' such as 'manage space', settings' or 'schedule'. Nothing at all happens when these choices are clicked. Could you please advise how to 'startup repair' from disc. I am unsure how this should be carried out. Thanks again for the help.

  • I have now uninstalled all AV and firewall software. Disabled windows security and tried a restore. Ureka! It seems to have worked and my system has restored to an earlier point. I still can not use the tools such as 'backup' or change settings or manage space etc. I am able to create a system image or system repair disc. It certainly appears that anti virus and firewall software interferes with system restore. I am at a loss to understand why other functionality in control panel/system restore options fail to work.
