migration between Windows 2008 32bit to Windows 2008R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have 2 Windows 2008 servers in our 2008 Forest/Domain. One is Windows 2008 32bit and the other is Windows 2008R2. I'd like to migrate the Windows 2008 32bit Domain Controller function to the Windows 2008R2 server. I know that I will need to Adprep the forest and domain but have not had any success doing so.

    The Windows 2008 32bit server is the first Server in the domain.   The forest is 2008.  I created the Windows 2008R2 server and joined it to the domain.   However, when I tried to adprep the forest on the Windows 2008 32bit server, I was not allowed to do so.   There must be something I have not done.  Can anyone help?

  • -"The Windows 2008 r2 server is the desired .....it is currently member server" - the configuariton completely wrong.

     When you add a Additional domain controller on server 2008,the server is on workgroup(not join the domain),just make sure the ip configuration is correct(avaible to the dc),then follow the steps;

    - Start->Run->dcpromo ->OK->"welcome active directory ...." Next->"Operating system com...." Next->"Select "Existing forest" and "Add a domain Controller to an existing domain" Next->then complete the installation by following screens.

  • Hi

     This is not supported across architectures.(32-bit to 64-bit).

    You could transfer fsmo roles from 2008 to 2008 r2,

    Transfering fsmo roles;

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/832.transferring-fsmo-roles-in-windows-server-2008.aspx

    Then demote old 2008 server from domain.Will do a metadata cleanup.make sure all AD DS,DNS,AD site and services,DFS records update.

    Then will do clean installarion of server 2008 r2 and add this server again as an Additional Domain Controller.

    Check for metadata cleanup;

  • I discovered what I believe is the main problem.   The forest is set to functional level 2008 but the domain is set to 2003.  I asked about this and discovered that the original server was Windows 2003 and later replaced by Windows 2008 32bit.

    The Windows 2008R2 server is on the domain.  It has all the Active Directory Tools but is only a member server since I can not DCPromo it.  So I can't transfer FSMO roles.   What is the best way to get the Windows 2008R2 server to take over the main DC role.  I'm think you are correct in that I probably need to demote the main Windows 2008 32bit DC but if I do what happens to the FSMO roles, the AD environment, etc.

    My thought is that I need to export the Active Directory information then demote the Windows 2008 32bit server and then I should be able to ADPrep and DCPromo the Windows 2008R2 server as there will be no DC remaining in the domain.   Am I going in the right direction?   If so, what tool can I use to export the Active Directory data (i.e. Users, permissions, OUs, etc)?

  • Hi

     First you could check the domain level version??(check it on adsi edit)

    13 = 2000

    30 = 2003

    31 = 2003 r2

    44 = 2008

    47 = 2008 r2

    56 = 2012

    69 = 2012 r2

    Then you could follow the steps on this articles for migartion and fsmo role transfer;

    http://blogs.msmvps.com/mweber/2012/07/30/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-or-windows-server-2003-r2-to-windows-server-2012/

  • tried using the steps provided.  Did not work.   Checked the adprep.log and discovered that the forest had already been prep'd and that attempts to redo the adprep with adprep32 yielded the following:

    adprep was unable to check the forest  update status

    adprep encountered a Win32 error: Error code 0x3a.  The specified server cannot perform the requested operation

    Another thought:  is it possible to backup the System State on the Windows 2008 32bit DC and restore it on the Windows 2008R2 server?

  • Hi

     Point is have to known schema version;follow the steps;

    -Open ADSIedit->Navigate "CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=Local" review the current "objectVersion" check this version on table my previous message.

    - Then check the domain functional level ->Start->Administrative Tools->Active Directory Domain and Trust->Right click ADDT,check domain functional level.

    For error check these;

  • objectversion is 30 and the domain functional level is Windows 2003.

    I am beginning to believe that there is no way for me to make the Windows 2008R2 server our DC and that I will need to somehow export Active Directory on the Windows 2008 32bit server and ultimately demote the Windows 2008 32bit server and then adprep/domainprep and dcpromo the Windows 2008R2 server AND hopefully import the Active Directory into the Windows 2008 R2 server.

    My concern (if I do this) is that once I demote the Windows 2008 32bit server, will the domain still exist?

  • Hi

     Did you try to raise the domain functional level to 2008??,also please check domain prepare proccess on the article in my previous message.

    ALso domain&forest functional level least to 2003 for migration.(your environment is OK.)

    Follow these steps;

    - Install a clean server 2008 r2(full updated)

    - Add as an Additional Domain Controller to this new server 2008 r2

    - Then transfer fsmo roles to this new 2008 r2

    - Demote old 2008 from domain.

    -Will do a metadata cleanup.(also check ad ds,dns,dfs,site and services records updated)

  • Can not change either the forest or domain functional level.  Forest is at Windowes 2008 while domain is at Window 2003.

    Follow these steps;

    - Install a clean server 2008 r2(full updated)...............this is already done.  The Windows 2008r2 server is the desired DC to take the place of the older Windows 2008 32bit.  It is currently member server.

    - Add as an Additional Domain Controller to this new server 2008 r2...........not sure I understand.  The Windows 2008 r2 server is the one I can not make a DC because ADPrep will not allow me

    - Then transfer fsmo roles to this new 2008 r2............ again. can't do it

    - Demote old 2008 from domain...............this is the plan once I am able to DCPromo the Windows 2008r2 server

    -Will do a metadata cleanup.(also check ad ds,dns,dfs,site and services records updated
