Ways to retrieve files from a corrupted snapshot file? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Experts,

My team did something wrong in the snapshot files of our VMs that eventually made them corrupted.  Now, booting the base disk, doesnt show up the files that we are looking for, they appear to be on the corrupted snaps and we need to recover them. Has anyone been in this situation?  What are the ways you guys did to recover the files in the corrupted snapshot files?  Is it still possible to recover them?  Please advise.

    Thank You!

  • Hi Noctis0791,

Thanks for posting in our forum!

As far as I know, in this case, we can't recover the snapshot. By the way, can the virtual machine work fine now?

    Best Regards,

    Daniel

  • Hi,

if you have the VSS enabled for the drive where the VM's VHDs are placed, then it is possible to retrieve.

Right click on the VM folder --> Properties --> Previous versions

If you see a list, then you are lucky and you can copy the older version of the same folder. Otherwise there is no other option.

If you have snapshots and then you may need to merge the disks in the right order to get the VHD intact
