DNS forwards for different subnet RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I have two subnet and would like to use a single dns, one ip. Is it possible to run on forwarding server based on the subnet?

    Client query from 192.168.1.0/24 > myDNS > forward 1.1.1.1
    Client query from 192.168.8.0/24 > myDNS > forward 8.8.8.8

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting in the forum.

Based on my experience, your requirement is impossible to be achieved through changing settings on your DNS server. Because forwarder and conditional forwarder cannot forward requests based on different subnet.

If you insist, there is an alternative method. You can set 1.1.1.1 as secondary DNS server on your first subnet DNS clients, and set 8.8.8.8 for  the other subnet DNS clients.

Meanwhile, you need to disable forwarders on your DNS server.

    Hope it can help you.

    Best regards,

    Hollis
