Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable

    Question

  • Hi,

After restarting our DC (Server 2008 R2 Standard), without no reason DNS service doesn’t want to start. I tried to start the service manually, but I received error message:

"Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable"

and for more information to check Event viewer.

I tried to start the event viewer, but now he doesn’t want to start. The error message is:

    “Event log service is unavailable”.

Also Windows server backup won’t to start due to error message:

“A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.exe) operation.

Reading events from the event log (The RPC server is unavailable). Make sure the Event Log service is running.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

I will appreciate a quick answer due to importance of the situation.

  • Hi,

    1.    Event Log Service Fails to Start

    ===================

Please try to implement the following steps:

Ø  For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

Ø  Click the Start button, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Services.

Ø  Select the EventLog service and click Startup. Change the Startup Type to Disabled, and then click OK. If you are unable to log on to the computer but can access the registry remotely, you can change the Startup value in the following registry key to 0x4:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog

    Ø  Restart Windows.

Note: When the system starts up, several services may fail; a message informing the user to use Event Viewer to review errors may appear.

Rename or move the corrupt *.evt file from the following location:

    %SystemRoot%\System32\Config

In Control Panel Services tool, re-enable the EventLog service by setting it back to the default of Automatic startup, or change the registry Startup value back to 0x2.

  • People, I don’t know why and I don’t know how, without any particular reason, the problematic server began working.

Last thing I did were suggestions from Elytis Cheng, but in start they didn’t worked. I even restart the server several times and nothing helped.

I left the server alone for two days and he come back to live.

I really don’t know what helped from your suggestion, but anyway thank you all.

  • Hello,

is that a single domain controller in the domain with AD integrated zones?

How long did you wait before starting it manual?

Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the DC/DNS and if exist also from others DC/DNS servers.

  • No, it’s not single DC. There are two, but this is a primary DC it has all FSMO roles except Infrastructure master.

Before I try to start services manually, it passes maybe 5 min and I still trying J.

Both servers are DNS AD integrated zones.

The first one DC1 (primary) is Server 2008 R2 SP1 and ipconfig configuration is:

  • I have two DC and there is more than enough HDD space on both DC’s.

I will check the articles, thanks.

  • Don't use 127.0.0.1 IP in DNS server, on both the DC configure each other as their preferred and itself to secondary DNS.

Check sysvol share is present using net share cmd. Local windows firewall service is disabled. Necessary service is started like DNS,FRS,KDC,Netlogon and these services can fail due to antivirus, try to disable AV and see if they start automatically during reboot.

Make sure all the DC's are full patched, their NIC cards are updated to latest driver, Firmware is updated, all the SP and patches are running latest on servers.

Event log verify, proper permission is set and its relative services are started.

  • Sysvol share is present and replication between two DCs working fine. I successfully replicate both DCs trough cmd: repadmin /syncall and trough “Active Directory Sites and Services”. “Active Directory Users and Computers” and Group policy management console also work ok.

In services console, “System Event Notification Service” is started, but when I try to open Event Viewer I’m receiving error message:

“Event log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running.”

I have changed DNS settings as you suggest and I have removed the AV program. Nothing seems to work.

  • Hello,

on DC2 disable RRAS services, this is not recommended on DCs.

Are the DCs using the same time zone and are in sync with the time, NOT more then 5 minutes are allowed?

Please upload the following files so we can get a bit deeper into the domain:

    dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:dcname >c:\dcdiag.txt
repadmin /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite >c:\repl.txt  ["dc* is a place holder for the starting name of the DCs if they all begin the same (if more then one DC exists)]
    dnslint /ad /s "DCipaddress" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321045)

As the output will become large, DON'T post them into the thread, please use Windows Sky Drive (skydrive.live.com) [with open access!] and add the link from it here. Also the /e in dcdiag scans the complete forest, so better run it on COB.

  • Hello,

          Starting test: DNS

DNS Tests are running and not hung. Please wait a few minutes...

                   Starting test: DNS

DNS Service is stopped on [DC1]

See DNS test in enterprise tests section for results

                      ......................... DC1 failed test DNS

Please start DNS service on DC1.

    For IP addressing, please:

    • Make sure that both DCs are DNS servers
    • Make each DC points to the other as primary DNS server
    • Make each DC points to its private IP address as secondary DNS server
    • Make each DC points to 127.0.0.1 as third DNS server

Once done, run ipconfig /registerdns and restart netlogon on each DC you have.

Please also make sure that needed ports for AD replication are opened: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727063.aspx

    The error was:

    Event log also doesn’t work.

Is it going to help reinstalling DNS server?

I'd like to confirm that you have reference the method Biswajit and Santhosh provided to troubleshoot.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for your verbose solution.

    1. I did as you told me, but in this folder you suggested, there are no *.evt files. Also for Event log service in the services console has been already started and always has been started but when I start Event Viewer, I’m receiving error that the service is unavailable and to verify if it’s running .

Because I suspect in everything now, I presume that full name of Event log service is “System Event Notification Service”, to be sure ?

    2. That link didn’t help me, to be honest, I didn’t payed attention on this problem for now.

    3. On firewall, all port are open properly, I even disable the firewall, but still doesn’t work any of this.

On the end, I have uninstall DNS role successfully, but now I can’t install again.

    I receiving this error:

    _______________________________________________________________________

<Informational>: This server might need to be restarted after the installation completes.

    DNS Server

     Domain Name Server

The DNS server role is being installed on a domain controller, and so DNS zones will be integrated with Active Directory Domain Services.

    DNS Server: Installation failed

<Error>: Attempt to install DNS Server failed with error code 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation

Please refer to the full log at: 'C:\Windows\logs\ServerManager.log'

    ___________________________________________________________________________

I’m not quite optimistic about all this and I think to recover this server from backup.

I have “Bare metal” backup, but I’m not sure what is going to happened if I perform Bare metal recovery from, let say a week old backup, I mean, when I start the recovered server, what it’s going to happened about the replication, with the DC who already running.

  • Hi,

I’ d like to confirm the network connective before everything. By design, the DNS Server service cannot start if there is no network connectivity.

The error Attempt to install DNS server failed with error code 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation occurs because the installation of the DNS server role is not successful if no network adapters are given IP addresses.

To resolve this problem, apply this hotfix by using following steps:

    ========================================

    1.    Expand the Msu file by using the Expand.exe utility.

    For example: expand –f: Windows6.0-KB971347-x86.cab “C:\Windows6.0-KB975654-x86.msu” %TEMP%

For more information about the expand command-line options, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Expand Command-Line Options

    2.    Use the Pkgmgr utility to install the .cab file that is extracted from the Msu file.

    For example: Start /w pkgmgr /ip /m:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB975654-x86.cab

For more information about Package Manager (Pkgmgr.exe) technical reference, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Package Manager Technical Reference

To work around the issue, make sure that at least one network adapter has an IP address assigned to it. Don’t have multiple IPs running. For the DNS server installation, set only one that is also connected to a switch and try again.

There is a related article for your reference: Error code when you try to install the DNS server role if all network adapters are disabled or unplugged on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008: "0x80070643"

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi,

When working on issues like this, we need to eliminate each and every part one by one. If we're stuck somewhere thats where the issue is exactly.. we may have to deeply go through each and every links provided by experts here to resolve the issues.. If you have time you can start it frm scratch again..

Possible issues what i can see here is,

DNS - You already had reference avlbl above..

Port blocking issues- Download portqry and make sure none of the needed ports are blocking. It is very simple to use .http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17148

Regarding backup and restore - Take a systemstate backup of an another DC and try to restore it using that backup.Thats the best way to restore.
