Upgrading domain controllers from 2012 to 2016 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We currently have 1 Ad domain, 3 sites and 4 domain controllers.

3 ADFS servers are hosted on the 3 DC's.

2 ADFS proxy servers hosted on non domain servers in the DMZ.

We are starting the planning for upgrading to 2016 R2 .

The briefing...exisiting SSO , Office 365 and saml 2.0 must maintain functional throughout.

    Any suggestions anyone !

  • I would suggest a fresh install and introduce additional DC in your existing forest. In similar way, you can introduce addition server in ADFS farm and proxy server. Once you are happy with functionality of new DC/ADFS/Proxy server, demote/remove existing server on phase basis.

  • Hi,
In addition, it is not suggested to install other roles on domain controller due to the importance of DC in the domain.
Regarding the impact of upgrading to windows server 2016, as far as I know, there is nothing, except for compatibility between windows server 2016 and the applications in your domain. In this case, you might need to focus on each application based on current version and make sure that it could corporate with windows server 2016.
In addition, since ADFS is also involved in your environment, you could also post the questions in the ADFS forum:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?forum=ADFS
The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Thank you for your understanding.
    Best regards,
    Wendy

  • Hello,

We had 2 DC on windows server 2012, tried inplace upgrade to 2012 R2, got stuck while rebooting in a black screen. Tried waiting and rebooting few times without any luck.

Restored to the snapshot, tried in place upgrade to 2016, have been running it for almost a month now and have no issues.

We still have our domain functional level in 2008 R2.
