Display user pictures in Windows Server 2008 login

Answers

  • Hello,

as far as i know you can change the user account picture only for all users with GPO, for single changes the user has to modify it on the local machine.

Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, User Accounts, in the right pane "Apply the default user logon picture" can be used for th all users and also the guest account as specified in the GPO setting.

Under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures you can add your custom pictures to the above location so that the user accounts applet lists them automatically. Ensure that the dimension of the picture is 128x128 pixels, and it's a Bitmap image (.bmp).

  • can you clarify what exactly you want to accomplish? In particular, where and which point of the logon process do you want this picture to be displayed?

  • If you want a user specific picture, as defined in AD, to be shown in the logon screen then I do not think this is possible since when you see the logon screen you will need to enter some credentials and the server will not have a clue which user you want to be shown... Only knows which user when it's done authenticating...

If you want to show a picture in the logon screen, as in Windows 7 for example... then yes this can be done:
*) Create pictured of 128px by 128px and name them user.bmp
*) Create a folder in %systemdrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft and name it User Account Pictures
*) Copy the user.bmp file into it
    *) Logoff and logon

We've done this with the picture of our company :-)
