Excel error "Cannot use object linking and embedding"

  • Hi together,

I'm managing a Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard. The only additionally installed software is Office 2013.

The DCOM identity for Microsoft Excel is set to a specific user, every time I open Microsoft Excel the error "Cannot use object linking and embedding" occurs.

I tried all suggested solutions, like DCOM config, virus check, folder and file permissions, Excel configuration like DDE, etc.

Does anyone have another idea of how to solve this problem?

  • Hi JF,

Have you ever tried to open Excel in safe mode?

If it works fine in safe mode, this issue might be caused by the add-ins for Excel is damaged or corrupted. You may disable the add-ins and check if you are able to open Excel without any issues.

Then you need to check the Excel startup folders at the locations below and empty them.

    C:\Program Files or Program Files x86\Microsoft Office\Office15\XLSTART

Please try these methods and check if they work for you, any updates please let me know.

I'm glad to help and follow up your reply.
