Understanding Maintenance window in SCCM 2012 CB RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi was reading a Microsoft article :

There are some lines which  confused me can any one clarify what does it actually mean ?

By default, computer restarts caused by a deployment aren't allowed outside of a maintenance window, but you can override the default. Maintenance windows affect only the time when the deployment program runs; applications configured to download and run locally can download content outside of the window.

When a client computer is a member of a device collection that has a maintenance window, a deployment program runs only if the maximum allowed run time doesn't exceed the duration configured for the window. If the program fails to run, an alert is generated and the deployment is rerun during the next scheduled maintenance window that has available time.

    There are  other question :

    1) If there is any maintenance window start of patching , will it not allow any application/package deployment to run at that time ?Why ?

  • What exactly is confusing?

The first paragraph simply means no reboots outside of MWs unless you override this behavior on the deployment. Also, content download is never affected by MWs.

The second paragraph means that the configured run time of the program or deployment must be less than the duration of the MW otherwise it won't be able to run during that MW.

For your last question, that depends on the type of maintenance window, however, there is no precedence between different types of deployments.
