Windows 2008 upgrade fails with [Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation.]

    Question

  • I expanded my C: drive partition and diskpart gives the following:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2003 Microsoft Corp.

    DISKPART> select disk 0

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.

    DISKPART> list partition

      Partition ###  Type              Size     Offset
      -------------  ----------------  -------  -------
      Partition 1    Primary             43 GB    32 KB
      Partition 2    Extended           298 GB    43 GB
      Partition 3    Logical            298 GB    43 GB

    DISKPART> select partition 1

Partition 1 is now the selected partition.

    DISKPART> list disk

Disk ###  Status      Size     Free     Dyn  Gpt
      --------  ----------  -------  -------  ---  ---
    * Disk 0    Online       341 GB      0 B

    DISKPART> list volume

Volume ###  Ltr  Label        Fs     Type        Size     Status     Info
      ----------  ---  -----------  -----  ----------  -------  ---------  --------
    * Volume 0     C                NTFS   Partition     43 GB  Healthy    System
Volume 1     E                NTFS   Partition    298 GB  Healthy
      Volume 2     D   KRMSVOL_EN_  UDF    DVD-ROM     1794 MB  Healthy

    DISKPART>

The upgrade fails with the following lines in setupact.log below:

Can anyone suggest steps to resolve that do not include a format and clean install?

    Thanks,

    Matt
