Outlook 2010 exported pst file is available in Exch 2003 ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have to migrate Exch 2010 Org to Exch 2003 Org.

We will export mailbox by Outlook 2010 to pst file.

and create new profile for Exch 2003 and will import pst file.

    1. Is it possible ?

    2. I think PST file has version. Is there any way to check pst file version and convert pst file version ?

  • Hi

I am sure you mean that you have migrated exchange 2003 to exchange 2010 :-)

you can move mailboxes from 2003 to 2010 by using the EMC or powershell.

you can also export mail from Exchange 2003 by using ExMerge or by Exchange 2010 with the New-MailboxExportRequest command.

    1. Regardless of moving from 2003 --> 2010 or from 2010 --> 2003 yes its possible to use PST files to do this but not highly recommended
    2. Outlook 2010 uses a modified UNICODE PST format so that it can support files up to 50GB however you should not have any problems moving data from the PST files into an Exchange server as long as you use Outlook 2010 to do this, i.e. you cannot use Outlook 2007 to open a Outlook 2010 generated PST file that is over 20GB
    3. If you are going from 2003 to 2010 you can certainly use ExMerge to export the data to PST however ExMerge only supports ANSI PST format which has a 3GB limit and anything beyond that level corrupts the PST.  Also if you are indeed going from Exchange 2010 to 2003 do not attempt to use ExMerge with UNICODE PST files it will not work.
    4. lastly regardless of the direction you are going i.e. 2003 --> 2010 or 2010 --> 2003 if you are interested in 3rd party products check out DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp which will allow you to open an OFFLINE copy of any Exchange database so that you can Browse, Search, Export mailboxes to PST & MSG or in your case migrate/import the data directly from the offline database into any Production Exchange Server, even cross version 2003 --> 2010 or vice versa.

  • There are 3rd party tools out there that can do this, not sure if there are Microsoft tools to do this.

  • I think the following is a good article to answer your question. the Author has also mentioned various third party tools to achieve this.
