DNS/ Pathping/Tracert question

  • From one of our DNS servers I try to perform a tracert to the following client

    tracert -4

    Tracing route to EDC []
over a maximum of 30 hops:

      1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms
      2    <1 ms     7 ms    <1 ms
      3     1 ms     1 ms     1 ms
      4    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  EDC []

    Trace complete.

EDC is our Domain name.  Why would dns return that?

I did check and there is no DNS reverse entry for the ip address (a forward record does exist but no reverse).

So if a reverse record does not exist does it return the domain name by default?  I wouldn't think that would be good but perhaps that is the case?
