Hyper-v RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I have a server 2012 machine set up with Hyper-V installed.

I would like to have some users have access to use (not modify hardware etc) some vm's (not all of the vm's)
The Users may access their vm's simultaneously.
Users would ideally be able to stop/start/restart their vm's.
The users can either be local or obtained from an already-existing Active Directory.
How can i assign the user rights for the vm's, and what do i need present on the user's PC's?
    Thanks

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your question.

May I ask more detailed information about your need?

    1) <<< The Users may access their vm's simultaneously.>>>

Do you mean the users which already logon the host can also login to the VMs?

If the VMs reside on a same domain environment as the host, we can use this domain users to access the VM.

2)Would you also like some users can manage their VMs and some others can manage remaining?

    3) The users can either be local or obtained from an already-existing Active Directory.>>>

By default, Hyper-V is configured to allow members of the local server's administrators group to have full permissions on the Hyper-V installation. In domain environments, individuals that are members of the domain admin's group will, by default, have full permissions to create and manage VMs on host servers. Members of the users group have a much more limited set of functions, including connecting to and starting virtual machines.

From Windows Server 2012, Simple Authorization is implemented by creating a local security group on the Hyper-V server called Hyper-V Administrators. The Hyper-V Administrators group is introduced and is implemented as a local security group.

This group can reduce the number of users that belong to the local Administrators group while providing users with access to Hyper-V.

The Hyper-V Administrators group is a new local security group. Add users to this group instead of the local Administrators group to provide them with access to Hyper-V. Members of the Hyper-V Administrators have complete and unrestricted access to all features of Hyper-V.
