  • Have you tried downloading the definition file manually? Worked for me.

  • Hiya,

I just ran the file noted above using both the 'Run' and 'Save' options and it has made no difference.  The update still shows as 'failed' and that there are no new updates available :(

  • Try running windows defender under C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe

Once the Windows Defender window comes up click 'Help Options' (next to Tools and the blue/white ?) click 'About Windows Defender'  A new window should pop up with some version info; The most current 'Antispyware definitions' version should be as of this writing. If you have the same # then that likely means a successful installation wasn't logged in windows update due to a manual install. That is, Windows Update wasn't used in the process of the successful update of the definitions. You can also update through the windows defender executable by clicking 'Check for Updates' under the same Help options menu.

Also, a quick search yielded this site: It may be a bit more useful than my own directions for checking the version/updating. :)

  • Windows Defender threw the same return code on my system too. So, I did the manual download and saved the latest defintions.

Then I right clicked mpas-fe.exe, chose Properties, clicked the Unblock button towards the bottom right of the Properties window, clicked Apply, OK, then ran it. That resolved the return code and the latest defs are now installed.

I'm running Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP

  • Hi,

I would like suggest you uninstall the Windows Defender and download the new one from this link:

    Hope this helps.

    TechNet Community Support

    System Requirements

Supported operating systems: Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 2

That specific version of Defender will never install in Windows 7 as it's not meant for it. Windows Defender is a component of Windows 7 and can only be turned off or Disabled, not uninstalled.
