MIgrate SQL Server Failover Cluster to Always on RRS feed

  • Question

  • Currently we have a sql failover cluster with an attached iscsi target. 3 windows server 2012 R2 machines w/SQL server 2012. We are looking to move to an always on group instead.  Can this be accomplished with using the same sql servers in the cluster?  What is the best path to accomplish our goal?

  • A better question would be: what is your ultimate goal? Is it just to migrate SQL Server failover cluster to Always On Availability Group? What version of Windows? What version of SQL Server? What are the business goals that you are trying to achieve?

  • Hi Mnesupport,

No you can't use the same nodes and cluster since for availability group each node will be a single instance and you will have to attach new storage to each node. The best path will be creating a new cluster with new nodes and new storage and then (depending on your migration window) move the new DBs to the new cluster and AG.

  • So you want to move to AG with standalone sql server instance or you ant to move this SQL FCI to AG ? Just asking to get clear view.
