After exporting OST to PST, folder appear empty, yet the number of items shows. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear Support:

I need to backup an Outlook 2019 ost file into a portable pst that can be shared with other computers or simply for backup purposes before messing up with the server. This happens from time to time.

Now, something funny happens. The resulting pst has a size corresponding to number of mails stored and unread items are showned beside folders, but he folder appears empty. That's it, no items are displayed.

Now, if you type anything in the search box, for instance "a" -one of the most common letters in use-  results appear showing matching emails (perhaps all except for those rare ones lacking of an "a").

Furthermore, if you select all oft the results form such search and copy them once again to a bran new separate pst files, this time they show permanently.  You can now transfer this file to another computer as a reference backup or keep it before deleting anything from the server.

Why has one to go around so many tricks to get a simple backup of an ost? it hits me... In Thunderbird every mail you download on imap remains there for good.  You just have to backup the folder and restore it any where.

Is there a simpler way? isn't this a total bug from Microsoft?

    Office 2019, Windows 10 Pro
