Pure Windows 2008 R2 domain with BIND DNS server

    Question

  • Hallo there. I am installing a windows 2008 domain. My boss says we must use BIND dns servers only, no Windows DNS servers. Is it possible and if so how do you go about it? Its giving me a nightmare.

I currently use this in test environment and it seems to work fine. Give it a go.

  • Running DNS on your DCs is not required for AD to function. However, it is recommended and best practice.  If you wanted to run BIND instead, it is supported, but you'll need the appropriate version of BIND to support AD.

Here is a older article to get you started

Configuring Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) to Support Active Directory

I would also recommend to test the same in test environment.

    Hope this helps

  • Did you ask your boss, what is the reason behind not to use windows DNS server which is free component along with OS then using BIND DNS server? It is much easier to manage and  aging/scavenging is available in windows but i don't think it works with BIND. Dynamic update, srv record registration etc works well with windows but no idea with BIND. I'll convince my Boss to use windows not to spend money on BIND.
