SCCM 2012 R2 upgrade to 1602 Management Point was broken now MP role will not install. RRS feed

  • Question

  • On Friday did an update to 1511 then 1602. Before hand we did pre-req's and did a test of the DB from a copy setup on a separate SQL server. Everything seemed to pass and the install seemed to complete sucesfully. We didn't notice issues until we started to do a test deployment of the new client. Symptoms of the problem were that the client would install but we would only see two actions (Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle,User Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle) listed under the Configuration Manager control panel on client PC's... Looking closer the client machines could not register with SCCM and failing to communicate with the management point. So looking at the server logs we found the following.

Is anyone familiar or aware of what would cause the Management Point role to not install with error Code 6?

    Regards,

  • You'll need to check ccmsetup.log on the system as that's what's truly failing here. Error code 6 for ccmsetup means "unknown error" though so hopefully the log will give you more detail.

  • Thanks for the direction, when the Management Point role is re-added I do see the CCMSETUP folder get created on the server under C:\Windows... There is a log with a variety of errors not seemingly related.

  • I don't see any error sin that log snippet.

One thing that does jump out is this though:

"This client might be within the boundaries of more than one site"

    That's bad.

The client is also being assigned to the site LB3. Is that the same site that the site system is being set up for?

Does the log really just end like that?

  • Hello Jason,

Thanks for catching that, that was a little short wasn't it (my copy/paste from Trace Log Tool) yes LB3 is the correct site code... I updated the post to have the complete log.

Yes I did not notice the reference to the boundaries, but it did defer to the correct site on the next step. (We share AD with many different agencies that also have their own SCCM servers and I'm thinking one of their boundaries includes an IP range that is ours) need to look into it.

  • Currently encountering this issue on an upgrade from 2012 SP1 CU5 to CB 1606.

We had two things configured in the environment that could have caused this problem:

    1. We missed to delete the PATCH= parameter in the Client Push Install properties, not sure if that plays a role here, but just to make sure, we deleted the parameter.

    2. We had a second MP installed on a remote system for testing purposes. As it was not needed anymore, we deleted the remote MP from within the console.

After these two steps, the next try of the MP installation was successful and the upgrade completed 100% green.

    BR,

    Fred

    1.Disable Client push install

    2. Uninstall ccmsetup from MP server

    3. Wait till uninstall successful
