Mixed processor cores in same failover cluster

  • Currently I have a 3 node (2 active and 1 passive) Windows 2008 x64 Enterprise Edition Failover cluster. The processors on the machine are all AMD Opteron 8380 (quad core processors). We are considering upgrading our nodes from quad cores to the AMD Opteron 8439 hex core processor architecture. However, we want to make sure that there isn't any reason this wouldn't work properly.

Previous to Windows 2008 Server the rules for having a supported cluster configuration were quite rigorous. Now if the cluster validation tool runs to completion and the cluster passes all the tests, Microsoft will support it.

Unfortunately, we're not in a position to purchase the server just to try it out. Has anyone out there done anything similar? Would someone from Microsoft please weigh in if this should work or not? Does anyone know if quad and hex core processors from the same manufacturer will play nicely in the same failover cluster?

I'm in the process of talking with the manufacturer to see if they have any information about this as well.

Thanks in advance for your help.
