Intel I340-T4 / I340-T2 NIC fails after 248 days of uptime when running Windows Failover Cluster.

    Discuţie generală

  • Hi,

I have multiple Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise clusters in different data centers that are all experiencing the same problem.  After 248 days of uptime there are events in the system log which shows the network link being disconnected and then a few seconds later it will be reconnected again.  This will continue until the server has been rebooted.

    Log Name:      System
    Source:        e1rexpress
    Date:          25/05/2012 06:16:41
    Event ID:      27
    Task Category: None
    Level:         Warning
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          N/A
    Computer:      DB1
    Intel(R) Ethernet Server Adapter I340-T4
     Network link is disconnected.

It is fairly evident that the problem is related to uptime, as these clusters are in different data centers and are not related in any way.  There is no common domain or network infrastructure, the only common denominator is that they are all running Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise, they are all cluster servers (I havent seen this on a standalone server, yet) and they all have the Intel I340 family NIC's.

Just to give an idea of the underlying hardware:-

    One cluster has 2 x IBM x3550 M3 with a I340-T4 (driver version
    another cluster has 2 x IBM x3650 M2 with a I340-T2 (driver version

I have opened a ticket with IBM to investigate any possible cause for this problem and their response is:-
"The reason for determined timer expire within exact 248 days should be lying outside of the host systems. There is nothing known that the Intel NIC driver would be responsible for."
They go on to say that my best bet would be to resolve this with Microsoft.

I would like to know if anyone has experienced this problem before or if they have any suggestions on how to resolve this?

  • Hi Peter,

Did you try the latest drivers ?

is the NIC on auto or set to full , and how is the switch setting auto or fixed speed.

  • We are experiencing the same problem you describe.

Were you able to find a solution besides reboot?

Do you have snmp service running?
