Licensing for SCVMM 2012 using with HyperV for Citrix

    问题

  • Hi,

I was planning to deploy citrix xendesktop for test purpose using hypervisor as Hyper-V.

It is necessary to use SCVMM to connect with Citrix studio when Hyper-V is used as Hypervisor.

I have Hyper-V already installed on a server. Would I need any license to download and use SCVMM 2012? How can I confirm? Please advise.

  • Hi!

I would suggest you contact Microsoft's licensing specialist regarding licensing matters, as this is a technical forum, but you will most likely need to have a license for your SCVMM.

I will give you some short information about the System Center 2012 R2 licensing below:

System Center 2012 R2 licensing for physical servers that are Hyper-V hosts, you license with Datacenter and for physical servers that are not Hyper-V hosts you license with Standard.

So if your test environment has 1 Hyper-V host you will need 1 Datacenter license (if you have 2 physical processor per host).

Keep in mind that with that license you can also use the other System Center components without buying and no matter how many VMs you have on these hosts you do need to buy more licenses.

The difference between the Datacenter and the Standard  editions is only about the virtualization rights:

    • Standard license: Can manage up to two (2) VMs.
    • Datacenter license: Can mange unlimited amount of VMs.

So the System Center 2012 R2 licensing will be depending on how many Hyper-V VMs you have/will have in your Citrix environment.

More information about System Center 2012 R2 licensing can be found in the link below:

Also have a look at the System Center 2012 R2 licensing guide

  • Hello Pushkar,

If you did not provide a product key when you installed Virtual Machine Manager (VMM), VMM installs as an evaluation version that expires in 180 days after installation. Therefore, you can use the VMM without product key before the expiration of the trial. Please refer to the following documentation for more details.

    Best regards,

    Andy Liu
