Lync 2010 HotdeskingTimeout Max Duration

    Question

  • We have what seems to be a unique set of requirements that may not be workable with Lync 2010, however it seems that they should be:

I work in a school division.  We require that users be able to log into the phone with their account, but the room account also needs to be reachable while they are logged in.  For example, extension number 1105 is assigned to room 105.  John Smith logs into the phone.  Users should be able to call either the user or the extension.  This is not optional, it is a requirement.

How I have handled this using Hotdesking.  I use an MSPL/Lync Server SDK application that intercepts logins to CAP phones, and sets call forwarding from the CAP phone account to the user's account.  This gives us the functionality we need and works fine.

The problem arises with the HotdeskingTimeout.  It appears that there is a maximum value allowed, and this confuses me.  Ideally, we would be able to set the HotdeskingTimeout to a value high enough that users would not have to re-logon their phones every day.  For users with a persistent office this is important (it is still required to be able to call the room extension if another user logs into the phone).

As it is, we can set the HotdeskingTimeout to 10 hours and it works as expected, and we see this in the log on the phone itself:

CLockedScreen::OnEndPointSignedIn: Signing in as hot desking user. Starting hot desking timer for 600 minutes

At 20 hours, it reverts back to 60 minutes:

CLockedScreen::OnEndPointSignedIn: Signing in as hot desking user. Starting hot desking timer for 60 minutes

Additionally, hotdeskingtimeout accepts a timespan value.  This should allow us to set it to something like "1.12:00:00" for one day and 12 hours.  This does not work, but I am unsure if it is by design or a bug.  It accepts the value and displays correctly in get-csclientpolicy, but we still see a 60 minute timeout.

This occurs with Polycom, HP, and Aastra phones all updated to the newest firmware.

    Any help would be appreciated

  • Hi,

Looks like the Lync phone edition has a maximum value support for hotdesktimeout, though you can set any vaild time in the client policy.
