Visio 2013 Default Line and Connector Styles RRS feed

  • Question

  • This question has been asked previously, but the answer is not sufficient. In the older versions of Visio, all you had to do was right-click and select the "set as default" option to set the default style for lines/connectors/shapes.

Where is this option for Visio 2013? No, I do not want to have to edit my custom template just to set a default style for lines/connectors/shapes. SETTING A DEFAULT SHOULD BE A BASIC FUNCTION.

Do I need to edit the themes? Because that option does not appear either. Do I need to create a custom theme? How does one do that?

Why should this be so difficult? It was a simple click-select before.

  • Hi,
According to my research, I tried to find the option “set as default”.
But I count find it both in Visio 2010 and Visio 2013.
    I find that right-click each shapes>Add to my shapes>favorites.
So I think you can try to set default shapes to favorites.

    Please check the following picture:

Now the mainstream software, including Office Flash Photoshop etc cancelled the option “set as default”.
They want users to customize their common tools or style.

Please refer to the following link:

    I hope it's helps.

  • Now that's a good answer! The linked page gets me what I wanted.

Now I can make one foundation drawing page set up with all the properties that I want for my shapes/lines/connectors and then I base all my subsequent drawings on that page. This totally helps with that.

    Thank You!

  • Neither of these answered the questions.

The question is related to a connector, which you should not have to pull from the shape library.

You should be able to set the line type/color/arrow style of a connector selected from the connector tool.

Exactly. I have spent more time trying to get this 2013 to work in my favor, than I have done any actual work.

I just want to be able to pick my connector tool. Set the line weight, the connector ends, etc. and use that throughout my drawing. I do NOT want to drag the connector from my favorites or edit every single line to match the connector I want. Yep, can use the paintbrush tool, but this is ridiculous.

Where is the option to set a default line weight, line style, line ends, color, etc. and have THAT one be my default from now on?

  • Can someone from Microsoft chime in here?????  This should be a simple process but is hidden away somewhere.

  • I havent found the answer yet, but i did find another way around it that may help

There is a comman called Last Line.  If you throw it onto your ribbon (which I absolutely abhor) you can click it then just drag your line where you want

  • Actually I just found it

You have to select the Master Shape and edit its properties

  • None of these answers help me in Visio 2013 for Connectors - has anybody found a solution?
    Wednesday, September 16, 2015 4:00 AM
  • Probably not the solution you were looking for, but what I found is pretty much the same as in older Visio versions: Styles.

The Styles window can not be found in the default menu band, but if you edit the menu band, there is a command "Define styles" (or similar, I got the german version of Visio). There you can redefine the default style of a connector. Let's hope, these style settings are per document, as they use to be in Word.

  • This worked for me. I had to create my own "tab", but it let me define the style and it (somehow) worked. Thanks, Piddy.

But honestly Microsoft, this used to be sooooo much easier! You seem to want to want to make everything user friendly and in the process take out things that used to work just great. I don't get the thought process there at all.

  • This simple solution worked for me in Visio 2013 Professional:

Under Design --> Layout --> Re-Layout Page --> More Layout Options --> Connectors: Change "Style" to Straight" and select "Current Page" under "Apply settings to.

I was able to change the routing style under Layout --> Connectors --> Line Jumps (I wanted "None).

  • Very simple.  Click design tab and select any but the first design next to Auto Size button.

  • Thank you :-)

I customized the default Connector style, now default has the end arrow and then created three new connectors styles

  • Yes, picking anything but the first design gives me back that stupid arrow pointing in a direction instead of just a line. Thanks

  • As per https://superuser.com/a/243619/674905, edit the document stencil:

    1. Open your diagram
    2. Viso 2013: Menu -> File -> Shapes -> Show Document Stencil.

    3. Visio 2019: Alt-Q, type "Document Stencil", click it.

New Stencil window shows up in left of screen, with lots of shapes!)

    4. Select the "Dynamic Connector"!

    5. Right mouse-click -> Edit Master -> Edit Master Shape

Master Shape is opened for editing.

    6. Change the Line Colour, Line Thickness, Arrow Type etc!

    7. Close the Master Shape.

You will be asked, do you want to save and update all linked items.
