USB PORTS RANDOMLY STOP WORKING.

Question
-
I am having an issue with some of my usb ports randomly stop working. the ports that continue to work are ones that have something currently plugged into them up to the point it's unplugged then that one also becomes unusable. so far the only fix i have found for it is to completely restart my computer witch is tiresome and hard on my HDD's. i have checked the device manager and no errors can be found.
my operating system is Win7 Professional (64bit)

Hi ctrl003,
Please try the following methods to solve this issue:
Method 1: Run the automated troubleshooter for your version of Windows.
For your information, please review this article Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.
Method 2: Fix common driver problems
When hardware that's installed in, or attached to, a computer doesn't work properly, it's often because of a driver problem. Hardware and devices require drivers to work properly with a computer. Follow the troubleshooting steps from this link and check if it helps:
Method 3: Reset the USB controllers.
- Disconnect all USB devices.
- Click Start, type devmgmt.msc in the Search box and then press Enter.
- Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device Manager.
- Right-click on the Generic USB Hub, click Uninstall, and then click OK.
- Repeat step 3 to uninstall all items under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Reboot your computer, and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.
What’s more, you can download and install the chipset drivers from the computer manufacturer’s website.
In addition, it would be helpful for future troubleshooting if you could help to collect the following information:
- Did you get any error message?
- Did USB ports work fine before? If so, what did you do after it worked well last time? For example, installed some software or changed some settings.

Try disabling USB selective suspension option, if enabled. USB selective suspend setting can be accessed in Power Options->select Change plan settings next to current plan->click Change advanced power settings. Here, scroll down for the USB settings, expand it, you can find USB selective suspend settings. Expand it and select the appropriate scenario. Press the down arrow to change the setting.
Enabling the setting will disable any unused port.
But if the issue persists, run SFC. Follow the link for more information on SFC:

Lany Zhang! I came across the same issue as ctrl003, however restarting my computer did not reset anything and the USB ports still didn't work. I tried exactly what you suggested, and that worked for about 30 minutes, then my ports decided to stop working again. I'm very confused as for what to do now. I can use any help i can get. Thank you.

What am I supposed to do if one of my USB devices is my mouse?Monday, December 7, 2015 5:01 AM

You just have to shut down your PC and unplug it for at least 30 seconds. This will reset the settings in the CMOS and whatnot. Then you will have about 30 minutes or so of time until the USB ports suspend again.Tuesday, July 18, 2017 8:26 PM
