SharePoint 2013: Migrate from SharePoint Foundation 2013 to SharePoint Server 2013

SharePoint 2013: Migrate from SharePoint Foundation 2013 to SharePoint Server 2013

  1. Install a clean/new instance of SharePoint Server 2013.
  2. Migrate content to new instance and then migrate the content over, e.g. with content database attached, 3rd party migration tool, or site collection export\import.

Apparently (see comment below), installing SharePoint Server 2013 on top of an existing SharePoint Foundation 2013 farm is not supported.

  • Per my information, this scenario is not supported.

After upgrading SharePoint Foundation 2013 to SharePoint Server 2013 as said above, I've got a problem described here: social.technet.microsoft.com/.../sharepoint-2013-search-not-workingnot-crawling.

I was unable to solve the problem, so I've finally contacted MS Support. After some time of digging and researching I was told that in fact, inplace upgrade of Foundation to Server is not supported for technical reasons.

  • Simple answer is no that isn’t supported as it was never tested that way and we documented the upgrade path as a migration. It might very well appear to work but you could run into complications in the future.

You must create a new SPServer installation and attach the content databases from your foundation installation to the server farm

Here is the documentation on it: technet.microsoft.com/.../cc262747(v=office…

Please see under “Supported cross-product upgrades”

“The following table lists which Microsoft server products can be upgraded to SharePoint Foundation 2013 or SharePoint Server 2013. Note that in-place upgrade is not supported. Database-attach upgrade is the only supported upgrade method.”

  • Thank you for information about SharePoint upgrades and migration. I would also like to recommend here a very effective migration software called Kernel Migrator for SharePoint. The software can help with migration to SharePoint, Office 365, One Drive & Google Drive. It also provides hassle-free upgrades from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2013.
