The table below outlines the system requirements for SQL Server Code Name “Denali” Upgrade Assistant:

Component

Details

Operating System:

 

  • Windows Server 2008*
  • Windows Server 2008 R2*
  • Windows 7

 

* Both 32-bit and 64-bit operating system versions are supported.  Itanium versions are not supported.

Database Software

  • Prior releases supported for application compatibility testing:
    • SQL Server 2005 SP4 or later
    • SQL Server 2008 SP2 or later
    • SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM or later
  • Upgrade releases supported for application compatibility testing:
    • SQL Server Code Name “Denali” CTP2 or later

Databases:

  • System databases. Backups restored from your production environment to your test environment.
  • User databases. Backups restored from your production environment to your test environment, including all user databases required by the application you are testing.

 

Note: The user running Upgrade Assistant must have administrator privileges on the test environment computers and related SQL Server instances. Make sure that the BUILTIN\Administrators Windows login is part of the SQL Server sysadmin server role.  In order to create a test workload, this user must also have access to an installed version of the application being tested and have the ability to configure it to connect to SQL Server instances running in the test environment. 

Local Area Network

The test environment requires access to a local area network and the internet if there are plans to do any of the following:

  • Connect to a server remotely
  • Copy backups, traces or testing results to/from a network location.
  • Download and install software from a network location.

 Server Code Name “Denali” from a Network Share.

  • Run different steps of Upgrade Assistant on different computers.
